November is American Diabetes Awareness Month!

Diabetes AwarenessDiabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. One in 12 Americans has diabetes – that’s more than 25 million people. And another 79 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, or are age 45 or older, you are at higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. The good news is that using diabetes awareness to make healthy changes can greatly lower your risk.

Watch Your Weight

Diet is a critical factor in preventing Type 2 Diabetes. Throughout November, The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is running its America Gets Cooking℠ to Stop Diabetes® initiative. This diabetes awareness program is designed to inspire people to live a more active and healthier lifestyle, empowering all Americans to cook nutritious and delicious food, and be more active.

Eat Healthy

Eating healthful foods doesn’t have to be difficult. Take the guess work out of what to eat by visiting the ADA Web site for tips, recipes and sample meals that your family will love.

Get More Active

People with diabetes are nearly twice as likely to be hospitalized for a heart attack or stroke. That’s why exercise is so important, and the ADA offers strategies and ideas for taking that first step toward better health through daily activity.
